Species Characteristics

The Southeastern Ibex is a very ancient species, with its most important colony found in the Sierra Nevada, where it inhabits the Mediterranean mountain ranges.

Males are known for their thick, rough and knotty horns, which they keep throughout their lives and whose annual rings can be used to estimate their age.

Ancient Origins and Horn Development

It is estimated that during the Pliocene Era, around 7 million years ago, the ancestors of this species arrived in Europe from Central Asia.

During the Riss Glacial stage, the Iberian ibex began to develop from the ibex populations of Central Europe.

Sexual Dimorphism and Group Behavior

Capra Pyrenaica Hispanica is an animal with strong sexual dimorphism. This means there are clear differences between the morphology of male and female goats.

They often divide into groups by sex, with males in one group and females with young animals in another. These groups can contain more than 30 individuals.
