Exploring Mongolia’s wild landscapes and hunting the majestic Altai ibex is a thrilling experience. This blog shares our journey to hunt the famous Altai ibex in Mongolia, alongside Curtis.

Our Journey to Mongolia for the Altai Ibex

The adventure began with a long flight from Chicago, with a stopover in Istanbul before taking a two-hour domestic flight to western Mongolia. After landing, we met our local guides, eager to help us find the legendary Altai ibex. Despite the jet lag, we checked the weather to plan our hunt.

The weather was sunny and pleasant that day, but heavy snow was expected soon, making our decision easy – we would attempt the hunt that very afternoon.

The Thrill of the Hunt for the Altai Ibex in Mongolia

Our guides sent out their assistants to start the search while we prepared our gear. As soon as we reached the hunting camp, the calls came in – ibex had been spotted. Excitement washed away our fatigue as we rushed to the hunting grounds.

Upon arrival, a local guide pointed out a group of Altai ibex resting in an accessible area. We grabbed our spotting scope to assess the situation, spotting several older ibex about a mile away. Moving cautiously, with the wind in our favor, we began our stalk.

After an hour of careful approach, we reached a perfect spot, but could only see two younger ibex. We waited patiently for what felt like an eternity. Finally, the larger, older ibex emerged, and Curtis lined up the shot. At just under 200 yards, he successfully harvested a magnificent Altai ibex from Mongolia.
