Starting the Southeastern Ibex Hunt
Bill’s adventure continued with a new challenge: the southeastern ibex hunt. Freshly arrived from Beceite, where he had already secured two impressive ibex trophies, Bill was eager to claim his third Spanish ibex on this incredible journey through the mountains of Spain.
Barely an hour into our hunt, we spotted a magnificent silver medal ibex surrounded by 10–15 females. However, with the two previous hunts completed ahead of schedule, we decided to aim higher and seek out a gold medal ibex instead. With determination, we ventured further into the rugged mountains, hoping to locate a large ibex previously spotted by our scouts. Unfortunately, luck was not on our side that evening, as we encountered only young ibex—future trophies for other hunters.
Challenges of a Spanish Ibex Hunt
The next morning brought renewed energy but also new challenges. A hot day with a full moon meant minimal animal activity. Hours passed with little movement, and we finally spotted another silver medal ibex in a difficult location. After careful consideration, we decided to pass on the opportunity, hoping to relocate the ibex we had seen the day before. Sadly, it was nowhere to be found.
Despite a discouraging morning, optimism carried us forward. As the heat intensified, we decided to climb to the highest points of the mountain, areas where ibex often seek refuge on such days.
The Climax of the Southeastern Ibex Hunt
Arriving at one of my favorite observation spots, we noticed two young ibex moving toward the other side of the hill. Taking a chance, we followed them, hoping they might lead us to a larger group.
Our persistence paid off. To our amazement, we found over 50 ibex resting in the shade, trying to cool off. Among them was a spectacular gold medal ibex that stood out above the rest. Without hesitation, Bill positioned his tripod, and with a precise 60-yard shot, he secured his third trophy—a stunning gold medal southeastern ibex, a highlight of his Spanish ibex hunt.
