Hunting the muskox in Greenland is the most amazing and challenging experience you can ever have. This terrestrial mammal is the largest of the polar areas. Adult males can reach 1.5 meters in height and 2.3 meters in length, and weigh up to 400 kilos. However, the females are smaller and lighter than the males.
Muskox normally live in a herd of 30 individuals, although in winter they can be grouped in groups of up to 100 individuals. The herd will generally be led by an old female and in case of danger from wolves, the herd will form a ring with younger individuals within the ring and the old males will provide shelter.
Hunting method
The hunting season is in spring. Greenland is the largest and sparsely populated island. Only 20% of the land is not covered with permanent ice, mainly along the coastline. Therefore, muskox will normally be found on this coastline. One of the best hunting areas is in western Greenland, about an hour and a half drive from Kangerlussuaq. A hunting area with wide valleys, hills and small mountains. Here, the total muskox population is approximately 5,000 specimens where a very high success rate is enjoyed.
The hunting method is to stalk them cautiously and stealthily and you will probably have to hide as much as you can. However, in most cases a shooting distance of 60 to 80 meters can be achieved. The noise of the dogs that are used to pull the traditional sled can scare the specimens at a greater distance, therefore, transport within the area is done with eight-wheelers or quads. These vehicles are only used for transportation in the area and to detect play.
Recomendable calibres are 338 Win.Mag, 7mm, 300 Win. Mag., 8 x 68 and similar. It is possible to bring your own rifle, but the formalities at Copenhagen airport are quite exhaustive so it is a waste of time. It is recommended to hunt with a rented rifle which will normally be a Remington in cal. 338 or similar, equipped with scope. This will make your trip much easier and more relaxed.
Hunting season of muskox
The muskox hunting season is in spring. In March, daytime temperatures can be -15°C to -25°C, and it can get colder at times. As of April it begins to be a little “softer” with approximate temperatures of -10°C to -15°C. It is necessary to wear very warm clothes, since while driving there are not many movements and it is possible to freeze with the wind. It is best to bring clothing to dress in layers, that is, warm underwear, warm pants and other warm and wind resistant pants. And it is highly advisable to rent functional fur clothing made from seal and / or caribou. This is the best outfit for hunting in the high north and top.
